Description
What it is. Seeds from Vicia faba L. ssp. faba, medium-seeded (var. equina Pers.) and small-seeded [var. minuta (Alef.) Mansf.] types. A legume grain, used whole or processed (e.g. dehulled, ground).
What it is for. Faba beans are generally used as a protein source in feed for several species, replacing part of other protein raw materials. They are generally included in compound feed for pigs, poultry and ruminants, according to formulation needs. Inclusion level is adapted to the diet and the animal's physiological stage.
Points to watch. Faba beans naturally contain antinutritional factors (tannins, vicine/convicine), with content varying by variety and growing conditions. No maximum inclusion level is set in the sources; batch variability should be checked and storage kept dry to avoid spoilage.
