Feed material Forages and roughage Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Hay is obtained from any species of grass, legumes or other herbaceous plants, dried in the field or artificially. It is listed in the Feed Materials Register (Catalogue 68/2013, chapter 6.6.1 - Forages) under the official name "Hay". Its composition varies with botanical origin and harvest conditions.

What it is for. Hay is generally used as a source of structural fibre in ruminant diets and in feed for other herbivores such as rabbits and horses. It supports rumen function and chewing activity, and may be offered as a forage component or incorporated into compound feeds and complete diets. Its use fits grower, maintenance and reproduction stages where fibre intake needs to be maintained.

Points to watch. Acid-insoluble ash content must be declared when it exceeds 3.5% of dry matter, which can indicate soil contamination. Nutritional value and hygienic quality vary with plant species, cutting stage and drying conditions, and are affected by storage moisture and mould risk.
