Fructose

Feed material Miscellaneous Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Fructose is a purified crystalline powder sugar. It is obtained from the glucose present in glucose syrup through isomerisation by glucose-isomerase, or from the inversion of sucrose.

What it is for. It is generally used as a readily available energy source and as a palatability enhancer in feed. It would typically be employed in formulations for young animals or specific diets where sweetness and rapid energy availability are sought. Use is generally considered for starter feeds or milk replacers.

Points to watch. No maximum content is set in the available sources; inclusion should be assessed according to formulation needs and carbohydrate balance. Storage conditions should limit moisture uptake given its hygroscopic crystalline nature.
