Description
What it is. Furfural is a flavouring substance (sensory additive, functional group 2b) obtained by chemical synthesis, with formula C5H4O2 (CAS 98-01-1, FLAVIS 13.018), with a minimum purity of 95 %.
What it is for. It is used as a flavour in animal feed, for all species, to modulate the flavour of compound feed. It must be incorporated in the form of a premixture, with no associated technological or nutritional function.
Points to watch. The recommended maximum content of active substance in complete feed (12 % moisture) is 5 mg/kg; above this level, specific labelling of the functional group, identification number and amount added is required. Storage and stability conditions must be specified by the manufacturer, and personal protective measures (respiratory, eye, skin) are required during handling due to inhalation and contact risks.
