Geraniol

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Geraniol is a flavouring substance obtained by fractional distillation of an essential oil or by chemical synthesis, with a minimum purity of 95% (CAS 106-24-1, FLAVIS 02.012). It is identified in the EU register as a sensory additive, functional group 2b (flavouring compounds).

What it is for. It is used as a sensory additive to influence feed flavour and palatability, in principle for all animal species except marine animals. It must be incorporated via a premix. As with other substances of this type, its use is generally guided by organoleptic objectives rather than a nutritional function. A related study on Pelargonium graveolens essential oil, containing geraniol, illustrates a use in feed and drinking water, but does not set the applicable use level.

Points to watch. The recommended maximum content of active substance is 25 mg/kg of complete feed at 12% moisture; above this level, the functional group, identification number, name and quantity of added active substance must appear on the premix label. Storage and stability conditions must be specified in the instructions for use of the additive and premixes. Given the inhalation and contact risks, operational procedures and, where necessary, personal protective equipment (respiratory protection, safety glasses, gloves) are required.
