Glycine

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Glycine is an amino acid obtained by chemical synthesis or protein hydrolysis, registered as a flavouring substance (functional group 2b, FLAVIS No 17.034, CAS 56-40-6). The active substance has a minimum purity of 98 %.

What it is for. It is used as a sensory additive (flavouring) in feed for all animal species, incorporated via a premix. As a flavouring compound, it is generally used to influence feed palatability; some studies have also explored glycine as a glutathione precursor, for instance in research on aged cats and on intra-uterine growth-restricted pigs, but these illustrate research interest rather than set inclusion levels.

Points to watch. Recommended maximum content of active substance in complete feed at 12 % moisture is 20 g/kg for cats and dogs and 25 g/kg for other species and categories. The additive must be incorporated via a premix, storage and stability conditions must be stated in the instructions for use, and specific labelling requirements apply when these levels are exceeded.
