Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Hexanal is a flavouring substance obtained by chemical synthesis, listed as FLAVIS 05.008 (CAS 66-25-1, formula C6H12O). The additive has a minimum purity of 97 % and is intended to be incorporated into feed as a premixture.

What it is for. It belongs to functional group 2b of sensory additives, flavouring compounds, authorised for all animal species. As with other flavouring substances, it is generally used to contribute to the organoleptic characteristics of compound feed, without a demonstrated nutritional function.

Points to watch. The recommended maximum content of the active substance is 5 mg/kg of complete feed at 12 % moisture; the additive label must state this content, and premixture and feed labels must indicate the quantity added if this level is exceeded. The instructions for use must specify storage and stability conditions, and personal protective equipment is required to limit risks of inhalation, skin or eye contact during handling.
