Description
What it is. Inulin is a fructan extracted from roots or tubers, notably chicory (Cichorium intybus L.), elecampane (Inula helenium) or Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus). The crude product may contain up to 1% sulfates and up to 0.5% sulfites, residues from the extraction process.
What it is for. Inulin would generally be used as a source of fermentable fibre, with prebiotic interest linked to its fermentation by the digestive flora. It would be used in various species, notably in young animal feeding or during feed transition phases, to support intestinal flora balance. Its use fits into nutritional strategies targeting digestive comfort rather than energy supply.
Points to watch. The residual sulfate content (up to 1%) and sulfite content (up to 0.5%) should be taken into account in sourcing decisions, particularly regarding the sensitivities of certain species. Composition may vary depending on botanical origin and extraction process, which justifies incoming control checks.
