Isopropanol

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Isopropanol is a flavouring substance obtained by chemical synthesis, with a minimum purity of 99.7 %, classified as a sensory additive in functional group 2b. It is characterised by the chemical formula C3H8O and identified by CAS number 67-63-0 and FLAVIS number 02.079.

What it is for. This additive is used for its flavouring properties in feed for all animal species. It is incorporated into feed in the form of a premixture. An associated study explored its use as an extraction solvent for bioactive compounds from olive leaves intended for broiler chicken supplementation, but this use illustrates a research application and is not a usage recommendation.

Points to watch. The recommended maximum content of active substance is 25 mg/kg of complete feed at 12 % moisture; above this level, the labelling of premixtures, feed materials and compound feed must state the functional group, identification number, name and quantity added. Storage and stability conditions are specified in the instructions for use of the additive. Personal protective measures (respiratory, eye, skin) are required due to inhalation and contact risks.
