Description
What it is. Lignosulphonate is a technological additive obtained as a by-product of wood pulping. It consists of branched amorphous lignin polymers bearing covalently bound sulphonated phenylpropane (C9) monomers, combined with calcium, sodium or magnesium, with a lignosulphonate content of at least 55% and reducing sugars capped at 20% on a dry matter basis.
What it is for. It belongs to functional group 1g (binders) and is used to improve the physical quality of feed, notably pellet consistency and stability. It is authorised for weaned piglets, fattening pigs, fattening chickens, laying hens and fattening cattle, as well as for all other species and categories, with a maximum content set according to species. It is generally used in compound feed manufacturing where pellet cohesion needs to be reinforced.
Points to watch. Maximum content is 10,000 mg/kg complete feed for the species listed above and 8,000 mg/kg for all other species and categories. Instructions for use must specify storage conditions and stability under heat treatment, and when used in solid form, respiratory protective equipment is required for operators unless risks are controlled by other means.
