Description
What it is. Lithothamnion is a natural mineral feed material obtained from crushed or granulated calcareous marine algae (Phymatolithon calcareum). Its calcified cell structure gives it a porous, mineral-rich matrix, mainly composed of calcium.
What it is for. It is generally used as a calcium source and as a mineral supplement in feed formulation. Its porous structure is also generally considered to give it a buffering function in diets. It is generally used in feeds for various livestock species, as a calcium carrier alongside other mineral sources.
Points to watch. Calcium content and acid-insoluble ash above 5% must be declared. As a natural marine product, composition may vary according to origin and processing batch; dry storage protected from moisture is recommended.
