Description
What it is. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. and related varieties) is a forage made of whole plants or plant parts, harvested and then dried. It is generally offered as hay, pellets, or dehydrated meal. Its characteristic composition is rich in fibre and plant protein.
What it is for. It is generally used as a source of structural fibre and protein in the feeding of ruminants, rabbits, horses, and poultry. Its use is common in formulation to provide digestible cellulose and support digestive function. It can also contribute to feed pigmentation through its natural pigments (carotenoids, xanthophylls).
Points to watch. The content of acid-insoluble ash must be declared if it exceeds 3.5% of dry matter, which may indicate contamination with soil or sand. Fibre and protein composition varies according to harvest stage, drying conditions, and batch origin, requiring regular quality control. Storage away from moisture is recommended to limit mould risk.
