Menthol

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Menthol is an aromatic substance obtained by chemical synthesis, with the formula C10H20O (CAS 89-78-1, FLAVIS 02.015), with a minimum purity of 95 %. It belongs to functional group 2b of sensory additives (flavouring compounds).

What it is for. It is used as a flavouring in feed for all animal species, incorporated into feed in the form of a premixture. It contributes to the organoleptic acceptability of compound feed. Its use falls within standard flavouring formulation practice, without a specific nutritional function.

Points to watch. The recommended maximum content of active substance in complete feed (12 % moisture) is 25 mg/kg; beyond this, specific labelling obligations apply. Handling requires protective measures against inhalation and skin or eye contact, and storage conditions must follow the manufacturer's instructions.
