Methanethiol

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Methanethiol is a flavouring substance obtained by chemical synthesis, with a minimum purity of 98% (CH4S, CAS 74-93-1, FLAVIS 12.003).

What it is for. It belongs to functional group 2b (flavouring compounds) and is authorised for all animal species. It is generally used to impart or reinforce a specific aroma in feed, in the same way as other sensory additives of this group. It must be incorporated into feed in the form of a premixture.

Points to watch. The recommended maximum active substance content in complete feed (12% moisture) is 0.05 mg/kg; above this level, the functional group, identification number, name and quantity added must appear on the premixture label. Storage conditions and thermal processing stability must be stated on the label. Handling requires operational procedures and, where risks cannot otherwise be controlled, personal protective equipment against inhalation, skin and eye contact.
