Description
What it is. Methylcellulose (E 461) is a food/feed additive obtained by chemical modification of cellulose, a plant-derived polysaccharide, through methylation of hydroxyl groups. It is a white, odourless powder with thickening and gelling properties in aqueous media.
What it is for. It is generally used as a binder and thickening agent in compound feed, helping to improve pellet cohesion and the physical stability of formulations. It is authorised for all animal species. It can also support technological processes requiring control of viscosity or water retention during feed manufacturing.
Points to watch. Use must comply with the authorisation conditions set for this additive category, without exceeding the permitted levels. Batch-to-batch variability in viscosity grade should be checked, and storage should protect the product from moisture to preserve its functional properties.
