Description
What it is. Nicotinic acid (niacin) is a vitamin substance of group 3a (vitamins, provitamins and related compounds). It is produced as a solid, with a minimum purity of 99%, chemical formula C6H5NO2.
What it is for. It is used as a nutritional additive to cover vitamin B3 requirements in all animal species. It can be included in feed or administered via drinking water. Niacin is involved in energy metabolism and several enzymatic reactions; a related study investigated rumen-protected niacin supplementation in growing beef cattle, without this fixing a use level.
Points to watch. Storage conditions and thermal stability must be specified in the instructions for use of the additive and premixtures. The additive is an eye irritant; appropriate personal protective equipment (respiratory, eye and skin protection) is required when handling it if risks cannot otherwise be managed. No minimum or maximum content is set in the annex for the animal species.
