Niacinamide

Additive Nutritional additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Niacinamide (nicotinamide) is a vitamin-group feed additive (EU no. 3a315), obtained as a solid substance with purity ≥ 99%, chemical formula C6H6N2O (CAS 98-92-0). It is the amide form of vitamin B3 (niacin).

What it is for. It is used as a nutritional additive to supply vitamin B3 in diets for all animal species, supporting energy metabolism and normal physiological function. It can also be administered via drinking water. A study in growing-finishing pigs examined nicotinamide combined with vitamin C and glycerine for effects on carcass traits and meat quality, but this illustrates a research use and does not define recommended inclusion levels.

Points to watch. Storage conditions and thermal processing stability must be specified in the instructions for use of the additive and premixtures. The additive is not skin-irritant or skin-sensitising but is eye-irritant, so personal protective equipment (respiratory, eye, skin protection) is required when handling it if risks cannot otherwise be controlled. No maximum content level is set in the authorisation; inclusion should follow the operator's instructions for use.
