Nonanal

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Nonanal (FLAVIS 05.025, CAS 124-19-6) is an aldehyde obtained by chemical synthesis, with formula C9H18O, used as a flavouring substance in animal feed. Its minimum purity is 92%.

What it is for. It falls under functional group 2b (flavouring compounds) and is authorised for all animal species, incorporated via a premixture. As with other sensory additives in this group, it would generally be used for its flavouring effect on feed, without a demonstrated nutritional function.

Points to watch. The recommended maximum content of the active substance is 5 mg/kg of complete feed at 12% moisture; above this level, labelling of premixtures and feed must state the functional group, name, identification number and amount added. Storage and stability conditions must be specified in the instructions for use, and personal protective equipment is required where inhalation or skin/eye contact risks exist.
