Description
What it is. Barley is the grain of Hordeum vulgare L., a cereal used as such or after processing (flaking, grinding) in animal feed.
What it is for. It is generally used as an energy source in diets for pigs, poultry, cattle and other farmed species, partially or fully replacing other cereals. Its use is common at all physiological stages, depending on the energy requirements of the ration. Barley can also contribute to fibre intake depending on the degree of grain processing.
Points to watch. Nutritional composition can vary depending on variety, growing conditions and storage. Storage under appropriate humidity conditions is necessary to avoid mould development.
