Pectine

Feed material Other seeds and fruits Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Product obtained by aqueous extraction from suitable plants (natural strains), generally citrus or apples. Only methanol, ethanol and propan-2-ol are allowed as organic precipitating agents, with their combined residual content not exceeding 1% on an anhydrous basis. Pectin consists mainly of partial methyl esters of polygalacturonic acid and their ammonium, sodium, potassium and calcium salts.

What it is for. This type of ingredient is generally used as a gelling, thickening and stabilising agent in feed formulation, in particular to modify texture and water-binding properties of the matrix. It would generally be considered for pet food, milk replacers or other formulations requiring a specific physical structure. Its use is not tied to a particular physiological stage; it depends mainly on the technological effect sought.

Points to watch. Combined residual methanol, ethanol and propan-2-ol content must not exceed 1% on an anhydrous basis. Composition and gelling properties can vary depending on plant source (citrus or apple) and extraction conditions, which should be checked against supplier specifications.
