Phenol

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Phenol is a flavouring substance obtained by chemical synthesis, with a minimum purity of 98 %, identified under FLAVIS number 04.041 (CAS 108-95-2, formula C6H6O). It belongs to the sensory additive functional group (flavouring compounds, 2b).

What it is for. This additive is generally used as a flavouring substance incorporated into feed, exclusively in premix form, for all animal species. Its use relates to palatability or standardisation of the aromatic profile of compound feed rather than nutritional supply.

Points to watch. The recommended maximum content of active substance is 5 mg per kilogram of complete feed at 12 % moisture; above this level, the premix label must state the functional group, identification number and amount of active substance added. Storage conditions and thermal processing stability must be specified on the label, and personal protective equipment (respiratory, eye and skin protection) is mandatory where residual risk to the user remains.
