Description
What it is. 6-phytase (EC 3.1.3.26) is an enzyme produced by fermentation of Schizosaccharomyces pombe (ATCC 5233). It is marketed in liquid or coated solid form, with a minimum activity of 5,000 or 10,000 FTU/g depending on the preparation. It is classified as a zootechnical additive, functional group 4a (digestibility enhancers).
What it is for. It hydrolyses phytate present in plant-based raw materials, releasing inorganic phosphorus and improving its digestive availability. It is used in poultry (broilers, turkeys, ducks for fattening, laying hens and other avian species) and in pigs (weaned piglets, fattening pigs, sows and other porcine species). One study reports its effect on ileal phosphorus digestibility in broilers and on interaction with zinc status, without establishing it as a recommended supplementation level.
Points to watch. Maximum authorised levels vary by species and physiological stage: 250 FTU/kg for fattening poultry and fattening pigs and weaned piglets, 150 FTU/kg for laying birds, 500 FTU/kg for sows and other porcine species. Storage conditions and heat treatment stability must be stated in the instructions for use. Personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection, is required if handling risks cannot otherwise be mitigated.
