Description
What it is. Polydextrose is a glucose polymer with randomly formed bonds, obtained by bulk thermal polymerisation of D-glucose. It is a synthetic carbohydrate, catalogued under feed materials (point 13.4.1, Miscellaneous chapter) of Regulation 68/2013.
What it is for. This type of polysaccharide is generally used as a source of fermentable carbohydrate or as a technological carrier in compound feed. It would generally be used in formulations where a soluble, low-digestibility fibre fraction is sought. No species, physiological stage or inclusion level is specified in the official description.
Points to watch. No maximum content or declared constituents are set out in the official description; any inclusion level should be set according to the formulator's own specifications. As with any polymerised carbohydrate, batch-to-batch variability in degree of polymerisation and purity should be checked with the supplier.
