Description
What it is. Sepiolite (E 562) is a hydrated magnesium silicate of mineral origin, extracted and processed by grinding/drying. It belongs to the technological additives in the functional group of binders.
What it is for. It is generally used as a binding and anti-caking agent to improve pellet quality and the physical stability of compound feed. It is authorised for all animal species. A study examined a mixture of sepiolite and kieselguhr (Anpro) as a technological additive for terrestrial species, without this setting a use level.
Points to watch. The safety of certain sepiolite-based mixtures for target species could not be established due to insufficient data according to EFSA. The additive poses an inhalation risk and must be considered a skin sensitiser, requiring handling and storage precautions. Authorisation of the substance is valid until 12/05/2027.
