Description
What it is. Tartrazine (2a102) is an azo dye obtained by chemical synthesis, marketed in solid form, mainly as the sodium salt (calcium and potassium salts also permitted). Its chemical characterisation meets defined purity criteria (colouring matter content, accessory matters, residual organic compounds, primary aromatic amines).
What it is for. It belongs to the colourants functional group (sensory additives) and is used to impart or standardise colour in feed. It is authorised for cats, dogs, grain-eating ornamental birds, small rodents, ornamental fish and freshwater food-producing finfish. A maximum content of 30 mg/kg is set for freshwater food-producing finfish, and 433 mg/kg for cats according to the earlier regulation's annex; these values are species-specific and tied to the applicable regulation.
Points to watch. Accessory colouring matter, residual organic compounds and primary aromatic amine contents are governed by strict purity criteria. Use is limited to the listed species, with maximum contents varying by species; extrapolation to other species or unlisted dosages should be avoided. Colour stability and homogeneity in the final feed matrix depend on manufacturing and storage conditions of the compound feed.
