Description
What it is. Taurine is a sulfonic amino acid-type substance (chemical formula C2H7O3NS, CAS 107-35-7) used as a flavouring additive. It is obtained by chemical synthesis or by protein hydrolysis, with a minimum active substance purity of 98%.
What it is for. It belongs to the sensory additives group, functional group 2b (flavouring compounds), and is authorised for all animal species, with a target species of fish noted on this sheet. As a flavouring substance it is generally used to support feed palatability and intake; it must be incorporated via a premix. One attached study investigated taurine supplementation in weaned piglets facing an LPS-induced intestinal challenge, and another in dogs with congestive heart failure, but these illustrate research contexts rather than set usage levels.
Points to watch. The recommended maximum active substance content in complete feed (12% moisture) is 25 mg/kg; exceeding this threshold triggers specific labelling requirements on functional group, identification number, substance name and added quantity. For additives derived from animal protein hydrolysis, the animal species concerned must appear on the additive and premix labels, and storage/stability conditions must be specified in the instructions for use. Authorisation runs until 2028-03-15.
