Thaumatin (2b957)

Additive Sensory additives Not authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Thaumatin is a sweetening protein (thaumatin I and II, 207 amino acids) extracted from the aril of the fruit of Thaumatococcus daniellii. It is characterised by a nitrogen content on dry matter basis of at least 15.1 %, corresponding to at least 93 % protein, with limits on sugars, sulphated ash and aluminium.

What it is for. This sensory additive from functional group 2b (flavouring compounds) is used to modulate feed palatability in compound feed, across all animal species. It may be used at stages where palatability drives intake, notably to support feed consumption. Storage conditions and stability to heat treatment must be specified in the instructions for use of the additive and premixtures.

Points to watch. The additive label must state a recommended maximum content of active substance of 5 mg per kilogram of complete feed with a 12 % moisture content. If the dose proposed on the premixture label leads to exceeding this threshold, the label must state the functional group, identification number, name of the active substance and the amount added. Authorisation for this additive expires on 21 March 2026.
