Description
What it is. Thymol is a flavouring substance obtained by chemical synthesis (minimum purity 98 %, formula C10H14O, CAS 89-83-8, FLAVIS number 04.006). It belongs to functional group 2b of sensory additives under EU feed regulation.
What it is for. This type of flavouring substance is generally used for its organoleptic properties, to act on feed palatability. It is authorised for all animal species and must be incorporated as a premix. A study in dairy goat kids assessed a blend combining turmeric, thymol, and yeast cell wall components on rumen development and performance during early rearing, though these findings do not set a recommended use level.
Points to watch. The additive must not be combined with other sources of thymol. The instructions for use of the premix must specify storage conditions and stability to heat treatment. Depending on the risk assessment, handling requires personal protective equipment (respiratory, eye, and skin protection).
