Trimethylamine

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Trimethylamine (EU no. 2b11009, FLAVIS no. 11.009) is a flavouring substance obtained by chemical synthesis, with formula C3H9N (CAS 75-50-3), minimum purity 98%. It belongs to functional group 2b of sensory additives.

What it is for. It is used as a flavouring substance in feed for all species except laying hens. The additive is incorporated as a flavouring premixture. A study in growing-finishing pigs investigated the effect of a related compound, trimethylamine oxide, on lipid deposition, but its results do not establish a use level for trimethylamine itself.

Points to watch. The recommended maximum content of active substance is 5 mg/kg of complete feed at 12% moisture; above this level, labelling must state the functional group, identification number and quantity added. Storage and stability conditions must be indicated in the instructions for use of the additive and premixtures. Protective measures (respiratory, eye, skin) are required during handling due to inhalation and contact risks.
