Description
What it is. Urea is a synthetic chemical substance (diaminomethanone, CAS 57-13-6), with the formula (NH2)2CO, used as a nutritional additive in functional group 3d (urea and its derivatives). It is presented in solid form, with a minimum urea content of 97% and a nitrogen content of 46%.
What it is for. It is used as a non-protein nitrogen source in ruminants with a functional rumen, particularly cattle, to contribute to the nitrogen supply needed for microbial protein synthesis in the rumen. Its inclusion in the diet must be gradual and combined with a sufficient supply of highly digestible carbohydrates. A renewal assessment study confirms the stability of the manufacturing process and previous conclusions regarding its use as a non-protein nitrogen source in ruminants.
Points to watch. The additive may only be given to animals with a functional rumen; the maximum authorised content in complete feed is 8,800 (unit per regulatory annex). Urea nitrogen must not exceed 30% of total nitrogen in the daily ration, and the diet must be low in soluble nitrogen. Protective procedures (respiratory, ocular, skin) are required for operators handling the additive or premixes.
