Veratraldehyde

Additive Sensory additives Authorised in animal feed (EU)

Description

What it is. Veratraldehyde is a flavouring substance obtained by chemical synthesis, with a minimum purity of 95 %. It is the additive listed under FLAVIS number 05.017, identified by CAS number 120-14-9.

What it is for. This sensory additive of functional group 2b is incorporated into feed in the form of a premixture, for all animal species except poultry and fish. It is generally used for its flavouring properties in compound feed formulation. Like any flavouring substance, its purpose is to modulate the palatability or olfactory profile of the feed.

Points to watch. The recommended maximum content of active substance is 5 mg/kg for complete feed with 12 % moisture content; above this level, labelling of premixtures and feed must indicate the functional group, identification number, name and quantity added. Storage and stability conditions must be specified in the instructions for use, and skin and eye protection measures (safety glasses, gloves) are required where uncontrolled contact risk exists.
