Description
What it is. Vermiculite (E 561) is a mineral of the phyllosilicate group, of natural origin, used after processing (thermal exfoliation) as particles in animal feed. It belongs to the technological additives category.
What it is for. It is used as an anti-caking agent, to limit clumping of compound feed and to facilitate handling and storage. It is authorised for all animal species according to the EU register. A study on piglets and fattening pigs examined its efficacy for this purpose, though its results do not constitute a dosage recommendation.
Points to watch. The FEEDAP Panel noted that the concentration considered effective as an anti-caking agent (10,000 mg/kg complete feed) exceeds the level deemed safe for piglets and fattening pigs (5,000 mg/kg complete feed); this gap should be taken into account during formulation. The authorisation of this additive expires on 6 July 2025, requiring verification of its regulatory status before use.
